INTRODUCTION TO KUJIRA (鯨)

Kujira means ""whale"" in Japanese. The whale is a symbol of liberty, generosity and peace.

The people of Ryukyu and Okinawa consider the whale, the largest creature in the natural world and abundant in the Pacific Ocean surrounding the islands, as the guardian of peace and nature. Just like the whale and the tranquil moments spent in the nature of Okinawa, enjoy the whisky to experience a sense of magnificence and serenity.

Inherited by 140 years of craftsmanship amidst the abundant nature of Ryukyu islands, the pinnacle of distilling techniques, and the distinctive subtropical climate of Japan, a miracle was born: divine spirits with early maturation.

Aged within carefully selected barrels, the exquisite whisky ""Kujira"" swims through a connected world.

Kujira Whisky is made from selected Indica rice and utilises the unique black koji(moldy rice malt) indigenous to this region for saccharification, fermentation, and distillation. It achieves a distinct deep amber-coloured whisky that has been matured in oak casks. Okinawa belongs to The Ryukyu Islands which are a subtropical archipelago located at the southernmost tip of Japan. The year-round warm and humid climate accelerates the maturation of whisky several times faster than in mild climates, enhancing the unique aroma of rice and creating a rounded body.

Black Koji - A type of moldy Rice that is only found in Okinawa.

Spirits are a reflection of the environment in which they are produced. Scotland is renowned for its high-quality barley, making it a major producer and pioneer of malt whisky. On the other hand, the United States, with its corn production, has made bourbon whisky a globally popular spirit. Similarly, rice is a staple food in Japan and an essential representation of Japanese culture. In ancient times, the people of Ryukyu crafted distilled spirits and presented them to the royal court. In modern times, barrel-aged spirits became popular among the American soldiers stationed in Okinawa. It is also known as Ryukyu Whisky.

Born from the unique terroir and brewing techniques of the Ryukyu Islands, the ""Kujira Ryukyu Whisky"" represents a new type of spirit that is destined to become a leading presence in the world of whisky.

MASAHIRO DISTILLERY

Masahiro Distillery was established in 1883 by Masahiro Higa, the father of Masahiro Higashitsune, who served as the royal chef of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Benefiting from the esteemed reputation and extensive network of Masahiro Higashitsune, the distillery acquired a license to produce Okinawa's traditional distilled spirit, known as ""Awamori,"" and has since emerged as one of the oldest and largest distilleries in Okinawa.

The pursuit of culinary excellence, inherited from Masahiro Higashitsune, remains ingrained in the corporate philosophy of Masahiro Distillery, with a dedicated focus on creating the finest spirits.

In 2002, the distillery achieved a harmonious blend of tradition and modern management principles by becoming the first distillery in Okinawa to obtain ISO 9001 certification, an internationally recognized standard for quality management systems. Its captivating and picturesque location continues to attract tourists and aficionados of spirits.

KUJIRA Ryukyu Whisky, a new type of spirit born out of the unique climate and brewing technique of the Ryukyu Islands, will surely become a mainstay in the world of whisky.
