Introduction to The Portuguese Connection Event

This TSMM Event will be featuring wines from SoGrape which is run by the Guedes family. It is a company with a long and rich history & in partnership with Le Vigne, we present to you our TSMM Event: The Portugese Connection.

Portugal is the birthplace of José Mourinho, “ The Special One” and Cristiano Ronaldo. Portugal is a country with a diverse and rich history.  A testament to Portugal’s rich history is that the oldest recorded physical book store is located in Portugal! Located in Chiado, Livraria Bertrand holds the Guinness world record for the world’s oldest bookstore still in operation, founded in 1732. With over 250 years of history, Bertrand was opened by Peter Faure as a small shop and was once a hotspot for Portuguese intellectuals across the decades. In 2010, the bookstore became part of the Porto Editora group and branches opened all over the country. However, the Lisbon bookstore remains a historical and cultural landmark for book lovers.

There are many different regions from Portugal producing many great wines. Winemaking and wine tradition in Portugal date back to the period of the Roman Empire. In particular, Portuguese wine grape varietals are unique due to long term isolation of grape varietals that only grow in Portugal.

We will be featuring Portuguese wines from Douro Valley, Vinho Verde and Alentejo. While it would be impossible to encapsulate the entire wine range that Portugal offers, we hope we will be able to provide a glimpse into Portuguese wines and spark some passion and curiosity for this Old World wine region.

Get ready to taste Port wine during this event. Port wine is different in that it is typically richer, sweeter and higher in alcohol content. This is because of the addition of distilled grape spirits that fortify the wine, with fermentation stopped before all the sugar is converted to alcohol, hence resulting in the unique sweet and complex flavour profile that Port wine is typified by. We will also be exploring and tasting other wines from Portugal. Read on to find out more!

Information about Portuguese Wines

We will be featuring Portugese wines from 3 specific regions, Douro Valley, Vinho Verde and Alentejo. Pictured in the map above, the 3 regions we are featuring are Minho VR(North Western area), Duriense VR(North Eastern Area) and Alentejano VR(Middle Area to the East of Lisbon).

In general, Douro Valley has 5 key grape varietals and they are: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cao and Tinta Roriz(Tempranillo). Our first aperitif(Port & Tonic) welcome drink incorporates all of these key grape varietals less Tinta Cao.

Vinho Verde refers to Portugese wine produced in the Minho province in the North of Portugal. Vinho Verde wines are characteristically made from a blend of Portugese native grape varietals. We will be featuring a White wine from this region comprised of 70% Loureiro & 30% Alvarinho.

The last region we will be featuring during this event is the Alentejo region. Red wines from this region typically tend to be comparatively more rich and full bodied in comparison to Red wines from other regions and countries.
