A Passion for Whisky

Douglas Laing & Co is a family-owned, Glasgow-based independent bottler. Established in 1948, Douglas Laing & Co is proudly a Scotch Whisky business in its third generation. Over 70 years of heritage have helped them to refine their processes, and deliver Whisky that is consistently exceptional in its offering. Since founding in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing, the company has upheld its tradition and is currently being headed by the third generation of the Douglas Laing family.

Abiding to the philosophy of presenting Whisky as the Distiller intended, they add nothing and take nothing away from the spirit, enabling Whisky lovers around the world to come as close as they possibly can to sampling a dram straight from the Cask.

Independent Bottler

An independent bottler is company that does not necessarily produce their own whisky, but purchase individual barrels from other distilleries, which they later bottle under their own branded label. In most cases, where teaspooning does not prevent this, the name of the original distillery may also be mentioned on the label of these bottlings. The majority of independently bottled whiskies are single cask bottlings, bottled without spirit caramel colouring and chill filtration. Being single cask these are generally not diluted to 40% ABV but rather sold at cask strength.

Douglas Laing & Co have traditionally been bottling whiskies and spirits from all over Scotland. They
have lots of successful brands such as Old Particular, Big Peat, Scallywag and Xtra Old Particular (Single Cask whiskies).

The rise of core ranges

It probably goes without saying that most distilleries have launched their own in-house bottling on the market today. The so called “core range” of bottlings that are regularly available from many of Scotland’s distilleries, usually released in ages 10-12, 15, 21-25 and so on. These are often augmented with limited run special edition finishes and more recently no age statement NAS whiskies.

At first glance this may have seemed like a death blow to the independent bottlers like Douglas Laing & Co, depriving most of their entire reason to exist. If anything this trend has fuelled a more radical development of the single malt range. Seeking to distinguish themselves from the supermarket facing core ranges independent bottlers generally specialise in single casks, unique cask finishes, and unadulterated whiskies. It is above all the diversity resulting from independent bottling that makes single malt whisky so interesting for connoisseurs. Not every distillery offers single cask whisky, or small batch bottlings. Some don’t even release their own bottling lines. Even those with comprehensive ranges can’t compete for the range of niche ages and finishes offered by the independents. In this way, independent bottlers contribute to the diversity in the whisky landscape.

Benefits of independent bottlers

There are a large number of selling points to independently bottled whiskies, as compared to the official bottlings released as part of a distilleries core range. Including:

  • The chance to explore non-vatted whiskies (so the special character of individual barrels is not lost)

  • A wide range of cask strengths and age statements

  • A range of unusual finishes and full cask maturations

  • Independent bottlers often feature unusual whiskies from distilleries without an official bottling series

  • The chance to buy rare whiskies and limited editions from long lost distilleries

Beyond these points, it is the sheer range of bottlings offered by the independents that make this category interesting for the whisky connoisseurs, and the much dreaded collector. Especially as it is possible to acquire extremely rare bottlings which have been allowed to mature far beyond the normal age offered by distilleries.

Cutha Distillery in Glasgow

A new modern distillery on the rise

Douglas Laing & Co produces and supplies Scotch whisky with a focus on artisan, small batch and single-cask bottlings. It currently has businesses across the US, China, Germany, France, Japan, Taiwan, and the UK.

Douglas Laing already owns one distillery – Strathearn in Perthshire, acquired in 2019 – and will soon operate another, a new-build £10.7m plant in Glasgow.

The new project’s aim is to house its Headquarter distillery & bottling facility in Glasgow, where they can start to produce their own spirits. The new distillery Complex is being built on the waterfront prime space of Pacific Quay river bank of the Clyde River and has been named Clutha Distillery. Clutha is Scots Gaelic for Clyde, the river on which the distillery will draw its water. They since started production in 2019 and will see its 1st batch of whiskies aged to perfection in at least a decade’s time.

The Clutha distillery will enable Douglas Laing to focus on improving its global export trade. It will also help in growing the company’s business in the existing markets of North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, China, and the domestic UK market.

Old Particular Glengoyne 12 Years

Single Minded Secret Speyside 15 Years

Speyside Single Malt

ABV: 46%, 700ml

From Douglas Laing & Co's Single Minded selection comes a 15 year old single malt Scotch whisky from a secret (though particularly well-known & famous) distillery in the Speyside region(We called the distillery the Secret M. But due to rights, we can’t reveal it here). The original distillery sold all batches of this experimental cask liquid to Douglas Laing & Co as the original distrillery does not want to deviate from their usual profile characteristic to their brand. This doesn’t mean this 15 year old is a reject from The Secret M distillery. The experiment was a success and this all round well balance liquid doesn’t come under the “Secret M” brand due to impasse from their strict Brand marketing. There’s a hint of peat in this which is why the reason Secret M cannot market it under their Brand as M traditionally don’t do peated whiskies. This is a sweet, malty single malt, rich in brown sugar, sweet spices and a touch of citrus peel along the way. This limited cask edition can sometimes go well over the thousands per bottle on the open market if you are well versed with “M”’s limited editions. So come savour and collect it at New Ubin Seafood before it is gone.

Nose: Cinnamon rolls, sultanas drenched in spiced rum, a touch of Madeira cake.

Palate: Barley sugar sweets and more cake-y vanilla, backed up by dried fruit and ginger.

Finish: Biscuit-y malt with layers of strawberry jam and marzipan.

Old Particular Invergordon 21 Years

Highland Single Grain

ABV: 50.7%, 700ml

Another Old Particular whisky from Invergordon Distillery but it is a single grain & single cask whisky - We can’t tell you how much we love this! Rare & expensive as it is for Single Grains(Think the Japanese Grain Whiskies), they are extremely delicious and worth every drop. Distilled October 1994 and bottled November 2015, one of just 206 bottles in the world.

Palate: Classic fudge on the palate alongside some supporting wood spices.

Finish: More vanilla.

Overall: A little one dimensional perhaps, even for a grain, but it's a superb tasty classic dimension!
